What do we sound like?
· Monday July 24, 2006 by Captain Bogg ·
Lively now, mates. I wants to hear from all you foc’sle hands.
“What do we sound like?”
That be the question I put to you, the faithful members of the crew. How do you describe Captain Bogg & Salty to any land lubbers that may cross your path? I am currently a’crafting a new promotional broadside for our newest album, Prelude to Mutiny, and I would love to hear from you mates. You know, something like…
... “Tom Waits trapped in Disneyland”...
OR
... “Oingo Boingo marooned on Treasure Island”...
Here’s yer chance to spout off and help ol’ Angus carve out a new slogan for the band. Add your comment here to this article and if I use your slogan I will send you a little something from the treasure trove, aye be bub.
I value your perspecty’ve matey. You know us better than “they” do.
Promotin the Crew,
A. Bogg, Captain

The way I have always described the gang is, “Cap’n Bogg & Salty, ‘The World’s Greatest Pirate Band.’”
At which point people ask me, “There are pirate bands?” To which I respond, “Oh, AYE! And Cap’n Bogg & Salty are the best’ve ‘em.” – Cap’n Poopdeck, father of “Monkeywater.”— Cap'n Poopdeck Jul 25, 12:16 PM #
I just play ‘em the music.
Seriously… ye do so many different styles, ranging from the traditional sea shanty, to surfer tunes (“I’m a Pirate”), to the Butthole Surfers(!) (“Wind”)... not to mention the trans-generational-like aspects of your music, it’s hard to be stuffin’ ye all into a pigeonhole.
Now, since PtM doesn’t contain any of the kids’ stuff (apparently, Salty was trapped in the rigging while the album was bein’ recorded), I’d simply describe it as kick-ass pirate rock; a suggestion that I suspect won’t win me any pirate booty. Regarding the material for the younguns, “Wiggles with a brain” comes to mind. (My five-year-old finds ye much cooler than Captain Feathersword, if that ain’t be damnin’ ye to Davey Jones with faint praise, than I don’t knows what be).
If you want me suggestion for a good bumper-sticker-like sayin’ to slap on yer stern, I’d avoid referencin’ any landlubbing musical types, and simply note that Captain Bogg and the crew are a cask of fine rum in a hold full o’ bilgewater. Oh, and let the music do the negotiatin’ for ye… an .MP3 of “Mutiny on the Hispaniola” available for the downloadin’ on yer website will do more wonders fer ye than the catchiest slogan in the world. Yer makin’ music, laddies, not sellin’ soft drinks.

So it’s a slogan yer fishin’ fer?
Well, I’m with Engineer Scotty, but “a cask of fine rum in a hold full o’ bilgewater” probably isn’t the image you’re looking for.
I picture a signboard hanging over the door of a small office in port:
“Captain Bogg and Salty: Chanteysmiths and Purveyors of Melodious Mischief”
Kinda lame, but perhaps a place to start.

instead of “there’s no turnin’ back”, it would be better as “there be no turnin’ back” or “there be no turnin’ back now”

Rowdy, gruff, but melodious pirates specializing in rock and roll and sea-shanties (plus bedtime stories for wee brigands).

When describing ye to others this is what always come to mind …
“Pirate Rock of the finest degree.
Consistently tight, well performed music. They bring magic to the libraries by day, and by late night seem to bring out deeper level of fun with an almost Led Zepplin feel at times. Though I dare say Capt and crew would do a great ‘When the Levy breaks’ cover, their music feels very original and is fabulous, without a doubt.
Essentially, Capt Bogg is always a good time!”

with this new cd the band has sailed their sound in to rougher waters
— af Aug 7, 07:15 PM #
A zesty blend of the muppets, they might be giants, and the pogues, with a chaser of ween and flogging molly

I have always thought that a cross between the Violent Femmes, Captain Hook, and Monty Python summed the crew of the Pollywog up just right.

When my friends say “Captain what and what?” I always say your the best and only piratical rock band ever.
