#14 with a Cannon Ball!

· Monday November 20, 2006 by Captain Bogg ·

We just got the bottle mates. A great collective of the kid’s and family music pantheon has seen fit in their infinite wisdom to dub Captain Bogg & Salty, one of the best this year!

The Fids and Kamily Poll, assembled from many of the great minds that tread the icy waters of children’s music in search of the true, life-savers, has put out a glorious list of the best of the best. Guess who made the list? Go ahead, guess. Yar! At lucky number 14… Captain Bogg & Salty: PRELUDE to MUTINY

The Fids and Kamily Poll, inspired by the Village Voice’s long-running “Pazz and Jop” music poll, is a consensus list of the year’s best kids and family music. The poll combines top 10 lists from critics, writers, radio programmers, and others involved in the music industry. The full results of the poll, including essays on the top 16 albums and a listing of the 50-plus nominated albums, have been posted at the Fids and Kamily website.

Our favorite Greasy radio mates, Belinda and Hova of Greasy Kid Stuff, do us the great honor of writing a review of PRELUDE to MUTINY. I will include it bellow for ye to read, but make sure ye make yer way to the official Fids and Kamily Poll to check out the master list of Kiddie-Fam-Fantasticos.

#14: Prelude to Mutiny – Captain Bogg & Salty

Maybe it’s not saying much to call Captain Bogg & Salty our favorite pirate band, but let’s go out on a limb and say they might just be our favorite band period. If you count the sheer number of plays their CDs have received in our household, no other artist even comes close. Yes, it helps that we have a 3-year-old who names “pirate music” among the things she loves, but the fact is, we listen to Captain Bogg & Salty all the time, even when we don’t have to. Prelude to Mutiny will have you cranking up the car stereo and singing at the top of your lungs after you’ve dropped the kids off at rock camp.

Filling in the gaps of Treasure Island, retooling The Little Mermaid for their own piratical purposes, Captain Bogg & Salty try on musical styles like freshly pillaged clothes, and are convincing every step of the way. Genre-hopping? Well, how else would you get from sea chantey to rockabilly to AC/DC-style metal, on just the one leg?

A note to parents: This CD is for “seasoned buccaneers,” meaning it’s a bit darker, a bit more fanatically piratical than the band’s previous releases. If your little ones haven’t got their sea legs yet, you might want to start with Pegleg Tango or Bedtime Stories for Pirates instead. But after you’ve played each of those CDs 100 times or so (and trust us, you will), the whole family will be ready to rock this one … loud!

Here in Portland, Ore., Captain Bogg & Salty are superstars, and it shouldn’t be long before the rest of the world discovers them too. To see what all the fuss is about, go to eatalime.com and watch the hilarious new video for “Pieces of 8ight.” Why these guys don’t already have a Saturday-morning cartoon show and their own line of action figures is quite beyond us.

Belinda Miller and Hova Najarian host the Greasy Kid Stuff radio show on Portland radio, 94.7 FM Saturday mornings.

  1. I couldn’t agree more. Why on earth are the Wiggles on TV and you guys aren’t?? One of the many things in this universe that makes no sense at all.
