A Pirate Band History
Part One - Of Pirates and Cheese
In May of 1998 two men met for grilled cheese sandwiches. Kevin Hendrickson, of the wildly popular Portland rock band Pirate Jenny, and Loren Hoskins, actor and writer with another popular, local institution The 3rd Floor sketch comedy troupe, sat down to discuss a new project. After a pouring over their mutual love for the classic Disneyland attraction, "Pirates of the Caribbean", with all it's wit and whimsy, as well as countless pirate-themed pieces of literature like Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, they went on to discuss their favorite records as kids. The LPs they grew up listening to were full of mystery, drama, and high-adventure, silliness and imagination, but without the saccharin-sweet, condescending tone of the music of the day (see: Barney). Kevin and Loren decided, right then, to make a pirate album. It would be a CD, rather than one of those dopey, red cassette tapes that was the industry standard for "kids music". It would be populated by a diverse array of swashbuckling characters, pirate soundscapes and musical styles. Pop, Rock, Ska, Sea Shantey -- it was all up for grabs. Kevin and Loren would set out to produce an album for children of all ages to pop in, press play, and play pirate. By the time the check came for those grilled cheese sandwiches and coffee, Captain Bogg & Salty was born.
